Matt Cherry conviction: Victim issues statement

A female police officer who was subjected to a terrifying assault at the hands of her former partner has issued a statement following his conviction.

Caroline Craft was six months pregnant when she was repeatedly punched by 35-year-old Matt Cherry in her Bournemouth flat. The 26-year-old was lucky to escape without serious injury and, fortunately, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy in July 2011.

Cherry was found guilty of attempted grievous bodily harm with intent at Winchester Crown Court today, Friday 7 September 2012. He was sentenced to ten years imprisonment at the same court.

Speaking after the verdict Caroline said: “The past 18 months have been a living hell. The actions of Matthew Cherry on that day were callous, cold-hearted and utterly selfish. I will never forgive him for what he did to me and what he so nearly could have done to my baby.

“I thank God that despite Matthew Cherry’s efforts, my beautiful son, Archie, was born healthy and unharmed by his actions.

“This verdict has given me some closure and I can now hopefully start to move on with my life and build a future for me and my son.

“I wish to thank the Police and my family and friends for their continued support throughout.”
