Follow Student Officers through Training – Week 16

This week the officers have continued with their P.E.A.C.E interview training, which stands for;

  • Planning & Preparation
  • Engage & Explain
  • Account/Clarification/Challenge
  • Closure
  • Evaluation

They previously started this training in week 4 where they focused on interviewing witnesses, including vulnerable, intimidated and juvenile witnesses, and also taking statements.

This secondary part of this training concentrates on interviewing suspected persons. The officers learn how to interview a suspect using the P.E.A.C.E method, which allows them to gain the skills to conduct an effective suspect interview where they obtain a good quality, detailed account of events, clarifying ambiguity and challenging inconsistency.

The officers then take part in practical interview scenarios to prepare them for the endless different interview circumstances they may face as police officers.

Next week the officers are putting the traffic legislation they have learnt into practice within realistic scenarios and they are also taking a visit to custody to gain an understanding into the process there.
