Teenager detained for stabbing a man in the head in Boscombe

19 June 2017
A teenage drug dealer has been detained for nine years for stabbing a man in the head in Boscombe.

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on Friday 16 June 2017 after being found guilty of wounding with intent and possession of a sharply pointed article in a public place following a trial at the same court in May 2017. He admitted supplying heroin and cocaine.

Once released, the boy will be on licence for an extended three-year period where he will be supervised in the community.

The incident happened at around 6.10pm on Saturday 7 January 2017 when the victim – a 50-year-old local man – and his girlfriend visited an address on Ashley Road to buy drugs. They bought some crack cocaine from a woman and shared it with her.

The pair then decided to buy more drugs so the victim returned to get another deal.

Inside the address they met the defendant and the victim attempted to buy more drugs but was turned away because he didn’t have enough money.

The couple left the property, collected their belongings and walked out onto Ashley Road.

They saw the defendant exit the address and the victim approached him on his bike. The victim felt a punch to the side of his head. He fell off his bike, touched his head and felt a knife sticking out of him.

Emergency services were called and the victim was taken to Poole Hospital and later transferred to Southampton General Hospital for treatment. He was placed into a medically-induced coma and X-rayed with the knife in place before doctors operated to remove the weapon.

The defendant was arrested the same day in Boscombe.

Detective Constable Scott Brimicombe, of Bournemouth CID, said: “The defendant had armed himself with a knife before he carried out this brutal attack. It was nothing more than miraculous that his victim did not suffer fatal injuries.

“I hope the sentence handed out by the court will send out a very strong warning that violent crime involving the use of knives will be dealt with robustly by the police and the courts.

“This teenage boy is a danger to society and the public should be reassured by his lengthy period of detention.”
