Equality Champions

Equality Champions are here to work towards:

Dorset Police currently has 27 Equality Champions covering the protected characteristics of:

  • Age – this applies in law for those aged 18 and over but our Equality Champions will also be able to advise in cases of Children and Young People
  • Disability – this includes sensory, mobility, mental health, learning disabilities, long term health conditions e.g. cancer and HIV
  • Gender reassignment – moving away from one’s birth sex to the preferred gender
  • Race – this includes ethnic or national origins (Gypsies), colour (Black and Minority Ethnic) or nationality (Polish)
  • Religion or belief – this includes lack of belief
  • Sexual orientation – this includes asexual, lesbian, gay, bisexual and heterosexual

The role of Equality Champion is vital to supporting the Hate Crime agenda and to supporting colleagues across the organisation in their interactions with communities.  Equality Champions are able to offer specialist advice and to open opportunities for engagement with those communities that have been traditionally viewed as ‘hard to reach’ and are able to support colleagues in this engagement.
