Our purpose is to support and underpin operational policing. Its purpose is to ensure that financial resources and operational strategies are matched, and that staff and suppliers are correctly paid. Without resources to pay staff and provide equipment, and without the processes to make those payments happen, operational policing cannot exist.
The Financial Department is responsible for the provision of a complete range of financial services to the force and the Authority. These services are either provided directly out of Headquarters, Winfrith or through contracts between the Authority and Dorset County Council.
Core functions include:
- Budget preparation and forecasting
- Budget monitoring and maintenance
- Salaries and wages
- Pensions administration and payroll
- Creditor payments
- Income administration
- Banking and cash management
- Overseeing the arrangements for devolved financial management
Maintaining a framework of effective financial systems and procedures to ensure that all financial transactions are both safe and efficient.
In Dorset Police many resources are controlled by operational commanders to ensure that they are used as operationally effectively as possible. Accountancy services seeks to provide good management information and financial advice to assist in this scheme. Providing financial expertise and advice across a wide range of force activity.
