Communications & Engagement

Dorset Police’s Communications and Engagement Department aims to ensure that members of the public and employees are kept up-to-date with the very latest news, campaigns and developments within the Force – as well as helping our communities to engage with the organisation.

The department provides a vital link between the media and Dorset Police, striving to ensure that essential crime prevention advice, witness and information appeals and safety messages reach the appropriate audience.

The team – which is available to assist officers and staff 365 days a year – is centrally based at Force Headquarters in Winfrith and provides the following functions:

News Office

The News Office deals with many thousands of media enquiries every year – helping to provide local and national reporters with interviews, statistics and information regarding ongoing incidents, serious crime and other major incidents.

The team is also responsible for issuing hundreds of proactive witness and information appeals to the public and publicises noteworthy sentencing outcomes as part of the Force’s Behind Bars scheme.

The Force’s News Officers provide a 24/7 on-call service for police employees, as well as providing advice, expertise and assistance for victims of crime, partner agencies and documentary makers.

The News Office is open to receive calls from accredited journalists Monday to Friday 7.30am – 6pm.

Communications

The award-winning Communications team is responsible for ensuring that members of the public are aware of the Force’s latest crime prevention and public safety campaigns, as well as making sure that important developments within Dorset Police are communicated to a wide audience.

Campaigns such as Operation Protect and the Dorset Police Advent Calendar are just two examples of work produced by the team within recent years.

The Communications team helps Safer Neighbourhood Teams engage with local communities and strives to update police officers and staff with the latest goings on within the organisation.
