Police & Crime Commissioners were elected in 2012 to every force in England and Wales, and have replaced the existing Police Authorities as the body charged with providing local oversight and scrutiny of police forces.

A police authority (whilst in operation) was an independent body made up of local people. The police authority's job was to make sure that you have an efficient and effective local police force.
