Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request ref: 01/FIN/24/2720
Version Date: 30/01/2025
The Alliance Roads Policing Department have provided the following information.
REQUEST 1: I would like to know the number of speeding offences that have been recorded by undercover police officers in Dorset and, more specifically, in the local area to the police station near Ferndown just off the A31.
I’d like this data month by month for as long as the data has been collected.
REQUEST 2: I would like to know the resources associated with the undercover enforcement of speed limits in Dorset in comparison to resources associated with other policing activities in the county.
I would like the resources data to be broken down into both policing time and all available financial information.
We assume unmarked is what the requestor is referring to when they say undercover. There is no dedicated undercover speed enforcement team, most police forces have a mixture of marked and unmarked vehicles, but the majority of our speed enforcement is done through the speed camera network and is overt, not through unmarked or undercover vehicles.
The Force do not capture data regarding whether the offence was recorded by a marked or unmarked car.
REQUEST 3: If the data is available, I would also like to know of any bonus schemes and/or reward schemes for any officers issuing speeding tickets.
There are no bonus schemes in place to reward officers for enforcing speed, this simply does not happen in any enforcement setting
REQUEST 4: If the data is available, I would like to know how many unsafe stoppages have been recorded, for example, stopping suspect vehicles on the short on ramp to the A31 at Ringwood.
We would not record a stop as ‘unsafe’ unless there was an adverse incident, such as a collision or a near miss.
A stop is not dangerous by virtue of the stop location alone, an officer would consider all the risks associated with the location and weight of traffic etc before stopping a vehicle.
The emphasis on a safe stopping location would apply at all times and is one for the officers to consider.
In addition, we do not record the location to that degree, an officer might only refer to the A31 nr Ringwood for example.
