Freedom of Information (FOI) Act request ref: 01/FIN/24/2227
Version Date: 16/08/2024
The Performance & Analysis Department have provided the following information.
1. Between January 2024 and June 2024, how many businesses or individuals in your local area / jurisdiction, have faced legal action (charged/cautioned etc.) for selling vapes (or similar products) to people under the age of 18?
We cannot identify any specific records or documents held by Dorset Police that will satisfy your request based on the details that you have provided.
The Performance & Analysis Department have confirmed that following searches there has been a nil return. This means that no recorded data relevant to your request could be identified.
The prosecution of businesses selling vape products to underage people within the remit of Trading Standards rather than the Police.
2. Between January 2024 and June 2024, how many times have the police been involved in (attended / charged / investigated etc.) cases of 'spiking' in relation to spiked vapes or similar products?
The Performance & Analysis Department have completed a keyword search for vape/e-cigarette/ecigarette for offences recorded as “Cause administer poison / noxious thing with intent to injure / aggrieve / annoy” which is the code we would use for drink spiking.
Between 1 January 2024 and 30 June 2024 there is just one possible crime relating to a spiking which COULD have involved a THC illicit vape. However, toxicology was not able to confirm that the victim feeling unwell was because of the vape, alcohol consumed or other factor.
Clarification:
A 'spiked vape / e-cigarette' is a vape that has been laced with substances such as, but not limited to; vapourised LSD, synthetic marijuana, or painkillers, which can lead to serious health implications. Examples of spiking include; adding substances to a product without the knowledge and/or consent from the victim.
