Reassurance offered to Gillingham community

Police were called following reports of a suspicious incident in the Wyke area of Gillingham on Tuesday 17 July 2012.

It was reported that a man had spoken to a child. Enquiries were made and at this time no offences have been disclosed.

Gillingham Sergeant Mark Creasey, said: “I really want to stress that this was not an abduction. While the children were spoken to, no physical contact was made.

“However, this was an unusual incident and so we are keen to trace the man involved.

"The Force is aware of rumours that are circulating on social network sites.

"We would advise parents that there is no reason to be concerned and we would ask that members of the public steer clear of the rumours and that they do not circulate them further.

“I would like to reassure the public that officers are on patrol in the area."

Witnesses and anyone with information should call Dorset Police in confidence on 101 quoting incident number 28:227. Alternatively, call the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111 where mobile phone tariffs may apply.
