The Dorset Police Child Protection Investigation unit was formed
in 1992 in order to deal appropriately with the increased reporting
of child protection matters.
The two Child Protection Investigation Units are based at
Weymouth and Bournemouth and are staffed by officers who have
received specialist training.
The units investigate allegations or suspicions of child abuse
through a multi-disciplinary approach, working with social workers
from the relevant Social Services departments or representatives of
other caring agencies.
Child abuse can relate to any situation where a child, that is,
anyone under 18, does not receive the proper standard of care
expected from a reasonable parent. This includes sexual, physical
neglect or emotional abuse.
Child Protection officers will also assist in interviewing
adults who now wish to report instances of child abuse which were
committed against them when they were children.
