Independent Advisory Groups

Independent Advisory Groups - The FREEDOM to challenge

Independent Advisory Group logoThe report following the death of Stephen Lawrence in 1993 criticised the Metropolitan Police for their loss of contact with communities, particularly black communities.  The report recommended the involvement of people in local policing.  One of the responses was the formation of an Independent Advisory Group (IAG) in January 1999.  Since then, the IAG has been influential in shaping the Metropolitan Police Service.

What is an Independent Advisory Group (IAG)?

Independent Advisory Groups aim to be a reflection of local communities, including minority groups that are sometimes described as ‘harder to hear’, and act as critical friends in providing advice to the police.

The first Dorset Police IAG was started in 2004.  We currently have:

  • Bournemouth/Poole IAG
  • Critical Incident IAG (CIIAG)
  • Independent Diversity Advisory Panel (IDAP)
  • Western Division IAG
  • Eastern Division IAG is currently being formed.

What would I be doing?

IAGs provide challenging advice to Dorset Police.  The specific subject matter would depend on the IAG joined.  Dorset Police may put some subjects for discussion forward for consideration and advice and some is raised by the IAG.  However, whatever is being discussed it is vital for the IAG member to feel they are able to give an honest and challenging view.  Dorset Police is committed to making Dorset feel safe and the views of an IAG member is instrumental in shaping how they do this.

I have a conviction is there any point in applying?

Yes.  Of course there are certain serious crimes that may preclude you, but it is often the views of those who have been through a police process that give us a valuable insight into how we can change things if needed.

Do I get paid?

All IAGs receive travelling expenses and refreshments at their meetings.  Other reasonable expenses are dependent on which IAG you join.

How often to I have to go to a meeting?

This will depend on which IAG you join.  Some meet quarterly, some more regularly.  However, we understand it may not be possible for you to attend every meeting.

How do find I find out more?
