Closed circuit
television (CCTV) footage continues to be used by police in
Bournemouth to catch offenders suspected of committing offences in
the town centre.
In June 2008, 33 arrests were made and 76 people were charged
with or processed on various offences – including assault, theft
and criminal damage – as a result of CCTV evidence.
Twenty-four of those arrests were as a direct
result of calls made by CCTV staff to the police.
Martyn Webster, Dorset Police’s
CCTV Liaison
Officer, said: “These results are testament to the efficiency of
the CCTV
system itself and the people we have in place operating it.
“I hope that by releasing these statistics
month after month, they serve as a warning to anyone thinking of
coming into the town with the intention of committing crime or
disorder.
“We will continue to use CCTV evidence to make
Bournemouth even safer for residents and visitors to enjoy.”
Councillor David Smith, Cabinet Member for
Community, said: “Bournemouth Borough Council is committed to
tackling crime and the CCTV system plays a vital
role in ensuring people feel safe.
“Our investment of £2.2 million in the town’s
CCTV system is
paying off and these arrests highlight the efficiency of the joint
working between the council and the police.
“Thanks to the dedication of the
CCTV camera
operators and the immediate action of the police, these arrests
were able to be made.
“We will continue to work with police in order
to ensure a safer Bournemouth for everyone.”
CCTV in Charminster is set to
go live in the next few weeks and Winton will see CCTV go live by the end of
year.
